Thank you to Hunter Farms for co-hosting this event and providing the pumpkins, hurling field and awards. West Sound Tech sent pumpkins hurling up to 283 feet, while demonstrating great teamwork and safety. Originally meant to be judged by special dignitaries including Congressman Derek Kilmer, Mason County Commissioners Sharon Trask and Kevin Shutty, State Representatives Dan Griffey and Drew MacEwen and North Mason Chamber of Commerce Board Secretary Greg Oldham. The students continued to have fun although there wasn’t much competition. Picture books are good for children ages 4 to 8 years old because they use a lot of illustrations to help tell the story. The student’s wood-crafted trebuchets enhanced skill and teamwork. Pumpkins are seen everywhere throughout fall, from decorations to pies It’s a great time to read and learn about them, especially with preschool and kindergarten children. An unfortunate accident broke the Rainier High Schools catapult and led them to forfeit the contest. Two groups, West Sound Technical Skills Center “CHUCK IT” of Bremerton and Rainier High School “SKILLS USA” of Olympia entered the contest this year, though only West Sound Tech thrilled the spectators with flying pumpkins. The public visited the pumpkin patch, got lost in the corn and hay mazes, took old-fashioned tractor hayrides, wandered the petting zoo and picked up local attraction information at the North Mason Chamber Visitors Center. Families, community members and visitors delighted in the bountiful harvest, food vendors and entertainment at Hunter Farms. Visitors that came from far and wide joined in the activities, with a featured event to celebrate the pumpkin – the Pumpkin Catapult Contest on Saturday, October 29, 12:00 – 2:00 pm, followed by live music. With older kids, you can even introduce the concept of trajectories and dive a little deeper into the math behind catapults. The community of Union welcomed the Fall season at its annual “PumpkinFest,” a month-long fall harvest celebration at Hunter Farms in Union, Washington. See if your kids can hit varying targets by moving the position of the craft sticks, altering how hard or gently they pull the pumpkin back, and using varying weights of pumpkins. This becomes a Fall STEM activity when you give it goals. Stabilize the bottom of the catapult and pull the top piece back. Glue the bottle cap to the top side of the wedge and let dry. Easy to follow, full tutorial on how to build your very own DIY modern farmhouse. Scrap wood, PVC conduit and a bungee cord. With the forecast of humid in the mid-90s, it seemed like a good day to make one of these. Tie 2 other craft sticks together on one end, then shove the craft sticks over the craft stick stack creating a wedge. The main attractions of the festival are the catapults, trebuchets, and (possibly) air cannons that launch pumpkins hundreds of feet through the air and. Discover recipes, home ideas, style inspiration and other ideas to try. Stack 8 craft sticks together and tie with pipe cleaners on two ends. We gave this project a fall twist by making a pumpkin catapult Fall STEM activity. Nothing is as fun to them as launching things across the room, preferably at each other. One of their favorite experiments is building catapults. After we created our two main portions of the catapult, we took the four. My active kiddos love hands-on STEM projects, and they are particularly fond of engineering experiments. So I thought, why not tie it to our science and have flying pumpkin races too. Sometimes, they won’t get a concept until we’ve done it in a hands-on activity form. To make the pumpkin catapult, I quickly gathered a few supplies: 7 craft sticks (wide craft sticks are easier for little hands to hold.) 4 rubber bands 1 small cup (We used the top to a juice container.) A hot glue gun First, I had each kiddo stack 5 craft sticks on top of each other and then I helped them bind them on each end with a rubber band. Because my kiddos are such active learners, I’ve had to be creative in how I present concepts they are learning at school and elsewhere. They would rather run and jump around a room than sit and read a book or fill out a worksheet.
